PKHT joins SPAB Scotland to support start of conservation works at Finzean Watermills

Between the 15-17th September the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings Scotland with Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, the Birse Community Trust and some specialist mill and waterwheel aficionados will be joining forces at Finzean, Aberdeenshire to undertake some maintenance work on some very rare kinds of mills (including Britain’s only bucket mill).

At Finzean, on the burn known as the Water of Feugh, there exists 2 installations of mills built between the 1820s-50s. Originally built for sawing timber and turning round wooden products, they underwent several adaptions over their lifetime with electricity generation becoming an extra yield and the addition of drying kilns allowing them to season timber quickly. They are still in operating condition today and this working party will undertake small elements of exterior maintenance to help them stay in working condition and preserve their original features.

On the edges of the deep forest from whose timber they are built and whose trees they convert to usable household items, The Birse Community Trust, is excited to support the continuance of these fine and unique examples of rural sustainability.
