PKHT Runs Successful Roadshow

Traditional Building Skills Roadshow 2022

On 28th and 29th September our first post-pandemic roadshow visited the grounds of Perth Grammar School. We engaged almost 100 secondary school pupils from both Perth Grammar and the neighbouring St John’s Academy.

After a short explanation students were given the chance to have a go at the skills

Every participant got to engage in 4 x 20-minute taster sessions, each demonstrating traditional building trades and giving them an opportunity to try out a typical task. The trades on display were traditional stone carving, slate roofing and re-glazing wooden frames with oil putty. To illustrate how modern technology can fit in with career choices conserving old buildings, thermographic and 3D scanning also were on show. Pupils very much enjoyed the chance to analyse buildings via familiar phones and tablets!

Delivery of the roadshow was supported by Developing the Young Workforce Tayside, Forster Roofing, T&M Stonemasonry, McRitchie Conservation & Restoration, BAM Construction and the Scottish Traditional Building Skills Forum. Historic Environment Scotland provided grant funding as well as the equipment used. We owe great thanks to these organisations for making this event an enjoyable exploration of potential futures for so many young people.
